We understand the fact that because of the recent restrictions being imposed on us because of the COVID-19 pandemic, it might be getting increasingly difficult for a lot of us to find motivation in working out sans the trips to the gyms et al! However, this might just be the best time to reinvent yourself when it comes to the workout front.

The great thing about home workouts is that you don’t actually have to go anywhere per se and could just end up making the best of this lockdown simply by following a few home workouts that you might have come across.

In order to help make the transition for you easier, we have here a few tips and tricks that could definitely make the whole process much easier. Have a look!

Take your pick

Welcome to the quarantine home workout life! From here on out things will definitely start getting clearer for people who are essentially beginners. So what is the first thing you need to do in order to ensure that you are able to carry through your home workout sincerely? Well, take your pick! There are so many different kinds of workouts that you can indulge in, that it can get quite confusing as to what you should follow.

From yoga and aerobics to dancing and cardio, all you have got to do is to decide what kind of workout suits your style and what you enjoy doing the most! Another amazing thing about this is that even if you tend to get bored with a particular workout routine, you could just rotate and mix and match the different kinds of workouts! Trust us, this might just be the best time for you to start working out!

Choose a space

You would be astonished to know what a huge difference it can make to your home workout routine when you have a particular space that you have allotted to your workouts. When you decide to set up space solely for your workouts, you are ensuring that you lay down a foundation to help you get the best from your home workouts.

When you set up space, you are mentally preparing yourself to make a commitment towards a better and healthier lifestyle, knowing that you would be working out during the time you are home. The best part? This does not have to just have to be established merely until the lockdown is over. You could very well keep working out at home post the lifting of the lockdown too!

Improvise

If you are someone who is used to working out with certain kinds of equipment at that gym of yours, then you might initially find working out at home slightly irritating. This is where you can use your imagination to make the best of your home workouts. Don’t have weights at home to lift? Well, use filled water bottles instead! Trust us, they DO come in extremely handy.

Missing cardio at home? Just use a skipping rope and skip your heart out to get it all pumped up for the exercises that are to follow! Don’t know how to go about those leg presses you used to do in the gym? Well, use the sofa as the weight and lift away! Of course, do ensure that the sofa does not end up slipping from the other end!

Don’t lose muscle

This is more of an advice than a tip per se! You see, when you are sitting in one place during your work from home hours in this lockdown, the chances of you losing muscle mass always arise. This is why it is important to prevent the same. For seasoned gym hitters, make sure that when you do workouts at home, you do so till the time you are close to failure. This will help push your body further, thus helping maintain muscle mass considerably.

When targeting larger muscle groups, a set of anything between 12 and 20 a week will help and a set between 8 and 15 for smaller muscle groups will go a long way in maintaining the health of your muscles in the long run as well.

Always remember, some or the other kind of physical activity is always recommended when it comes to helping speed up your metabolism even when you are not at your most active. This, in turn, will help you healthier both physically and mentally as well during the lockdown!

So everyone, do remember to indulge in some or the other kind of physical activity during the lockdown to make sure that you come out of it healthier than you went in!

The post Tips to keep in mind when working out at home first appeared on Fit Foodies Mantra.

However, one thing about the disease is true, the fact that diabetes can be controlled to a great extent, merely by following a good diet and knowing which foods you need to eat on a regular basis and which ones to avoid!

3 Foods to Have:

1. Cinnamon:

Cinnamon happens to be one the most antioxidant-rich spice that is available to us so freely. According to a ton of research, it has been found that cinnamon helps lower blood sugar levels to a great extent and also helps in improving sensitivity to insulin.

Apart from this, research has also shown that cinnamon, apart from lowering blood glucose levels, also helps lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Try to opt for Ceylon cinnamon instead of cassia cinnamon, which has been known to cause health issues if taken in high doses.

2. Chia Seeds:
Chia seeds might just be one of the most diabetic-friendly foods that we can find in the market nowadays. This is due to the fact that chia seeds happen to be brilliantly rich in fiber while being quite low in carbohydrates.

It is viscous fiber that is present in chia seeds, which can actually help lower blood sugar levels wonderfully, as it slows down the rate in which the food we have had passes through the gut. Chia is also very effective when it comes to weight control as the fiber present in the seeds makes one feel fuller for longer.

3. Fatty Fish:

Salmon and mackerel, and even anchovies are amazing sources of omega-3 fatty acids, that are brilliantly beneficial for everyone’s heart. Since people with diabetes are at a higher risk of developing heart issues and stroke as well, fatty fish can be very beneficial for people having diabetes.

Since fish also happens to be full of protein, it also helps increase your metabolic rate quite effectively. The omega-3 fatty acids present in the fish also act as a protector for the cells that line the blood vessels in your body, and other than that also reduces inflammation.

3 Foods to Avoid:

1. White Bread/Pasta and Rice:

It is a known fact that people with diabetes should not eat foods that are high in carbs, and so including white bread or the likes are not really recommended for diabetic people. Pastas too, especially if they are labeled as gluten-free and are rice based, can have an adverse effect on the blood sugar levels.

Since these are mostly processed foods, they contain very little fiber in them, as can prove bad for your health since fiber helps slow down the absorption of sugar into the blood from the food. If you do want to have breads or pastas, try using high-fiber alternatives.

2. Dried Fruit:
Many fruits are quite good for people with diabetes, but that does not mean that you decide to indulge in any fruit variant that you might get in the market. Fruits, when in their natural form, are full of vitamins and minerals that are very beneficial for your health. But this changes when the fruit is subjected to drying.

When dried, the natural content in the fruits is lost, as a result of which the concentration of the nutrients and components present in the fruit, increase to a great extent. This might sound like a good thing to you, but remember, even the sugar content in the fruit increases, which is not really a good thing for diabetics, is it?

3. Fruit Juice:

It might shock you to know that, for diabetics, fruits juices and sodas/sugary drinks pretty much have the same effect on the body. Even unsweetened or 100% sugar-free juices are not exempt from this rule.

Fruit juices happen to be full of fructose, and this very fructose is one that is very harmful and renders the insulin resistant and also leads to obesity and various heart diseases. Instead, try indulging in water that has been infused with the goodness of lemons, mint and the likes.

We hope that we were able to answer a few of the questions that you might have had regarding this disease. Remember, diabetes is something that CAN be controlled effectively, merely by following a healthy and balanced diet!

The post Foods to have and avoid for people with diabetes first appeared on Fit Foodies Mantra.

The basic cause of diabetes is the inability of the body to produce the right amount of insulin in order to help control the blood sugar spikes that commonly affect people suffering from diabetes. Controlling your blood sugar levels are of utmost importance, since if one is not able to control their glucose levels, then it can lead to many health complications in the long run.

Importance of controlling blood sugar levels:

source: beatoapp

If you are a person suffering from diabetes, then it becomes all the more important to control your blood sugar levels to make sure that they do not cause further health issues. There is a particular desired range that diabetic patients and even people not suffering from are advised to stick to, and when one talks about diabetes control, then they are essentially referring to how close a person can stick to that particular range to ensure a better control over their glucose levels.

Too high or too low blood sugar levels are not a great sign of good sugar control and can be caused due to a number of issues like:

Not following a particular/prescribed meal plan

Skip or stop taking the prescribed medicines

Not checking blood sugar levels regularly

Less or too much exercise

Problems that could arise from not controlling blood sugar levels:

Short-term problems:

Hyperglycaemia: Hyperglycaemia arises when the blood sugar levels rise above the normally indicated levels. This can be due to the fact that the body is not able to produce the desired levels of insulin to help control the sugar levels effectively. As a result of this, a diabetic might experience excessive thirst, increased urination, and in some cases, also unexplained weight loss.

Hypoglycemia: Hypoglycaemia is the opposite of hyperglycemia, as it occurs when a diabetic person’s blood sugar levels fall below the normal levels. If left uncontrolled, then it can get potentially life-threatening. People who go into hypoglycemic mode can suffer from fatigue, blurry vision, seizures and even loss of consciousness in some cases.

Long-term problems:

Damage to organs like kidney, eyes, heart, and nerves

Stroke

Vision problems

Kidney issues

Heart Diseases

However, the good news is that diabetes is one disease that can be brought under control with the right kind of medications, exercise, and food.

Foods That Matter

There are many foods that can help you effectively control your blood sugar levels and keep complications and issues at bay.

Leafy Greens:

Source: huffingtonpost

Leafy green vegetables are extremely nutritious and low in calories too. Another benefit of eating leafy green vegetables is that they are also low in carbs that are the core reason for raising your blood sugar levels.

Vegetables like spinach and kale are brilliant sources of various vitamins and minerals, especially Vitamin C. According to studies, it has been found that intake of Vitamin C in people suffering from diabetes, helps reduce inflammation and even fasting blood sugar levels effectively.

Chia Seeds:

source: oncevatan

High in fiber and extremely low in digestible carbohydrate, chia seeds happen to be a miracle food when it comes foods that people with diabetes can consume. Chia seeds contain viscous fiber which has been known to even lower blood sugar levels considerably, as it helps to lower the rate at which food passes down one’s gut and also the rate at which it is absorbed.

The fiber in chia seeds, also make you feel fuller and reduce your appetite to help one achieve a healthy weight as well.

Cinnamon:

Source: livestrong

Cinnamon has been used for over centuries on end due to its anti-oxidant properties. It has also been found that cinnamon helps lower blood sugar levels considerably and also helps the body’s sensitivity towards insulin.

Apart from this, cinnamon has also been known to reduce triglyceride levels and control cholesterol as well.

What you need to remember when it comes to diabetes control is that it is something that can be done, and quite easily at that, by merely being disciplined about what you eat, your activity levels and the medicines you take. It is a disease that can be controlled, provided you take care to remember all these things!

The post Why is it important to control diabetes and foods that help you do it! first appeared on Fit Foodies Mantra.

The post Post-Workout Recovery Guide! first appeared on Fit Foodies Mantra.

We know that working out can feel like a stress buster and ofcourse it is great for your health, but we also know that post any kind of workout routine, your entire body is always sore to the core. So now get ready to take off those hand-wraps and those sneakers, because it is post-workout recovery time for you!

Post-workout recovery is of essential importance, seeing that when you workout, you end up physically breaking down your body. From your connective tissues to your muscle fibers, all of them are affected. So recovery becomes important, otherwise, it will only end up leading to a lot of health issues like high blood pressure, a compromised immune system, poor sleep etc. Even simple things like sleeping the right amount and keeping yourself hydrated go a long way when it comes to recovering from a strenuous workout.

But here, we have tried to divide certain recovery methods according to your workout regime! Have a look at them!

Weightlifting:

Indulging in the right kind of recovery post a brilliant workout session will ensure that you are at your best during your next weightlifting session as well! The recovery that you decide to undertake post a good weightlifting session will ensure that you are able to relieve the tension in your muscles.

Massages will help you brilliantly to recover and reduce the pain that is associated with exercise and if done regularly, and can easily also delay muscle soreness considerably. But if you think that massages are something that is out of your budget, then foam rolling will also help tremendously. Like massages, foam rolling too can delay the onset of muscle soreness effectively.

Marathon Training:

So you have decided to take part in a marathon eh? Well, kudos to you! But since marathon training involves a lot of endurance training, it is exceptionally important for you to make sure that you follow the right recovery routine too. As marathon training involves many months of commitment to rigorous training, you need to relax body and particularly, your feet!

Epsom salt baths are the best when it comes to recovering from rigorous training, as they help destroy that soreness that your muscles are having post each of your sessions! Apart from this, including cherries that are tart to taste, in your post-workout meal can help reduce muscle soreness considerably.

HIT (High-Intensity Training):

High-intensity training includes many workout routines that can affect your nervous system and your body as a whole. So keeping that in mind, it is always suggested that atleast a 15 minute cooling down routine is followed post any kind of high-intensity training.

This will allow your heart rate to return to normal and helps your central nervous system de-regulate, thus speeding up the recovery process brilliantly. And if you are someone who likes their daily cuppa, then we have some good news for you. Studies have shown that coffee can, like other recovery methods, helps delay muscle soreness too!

We genuinely hope that these methods will help you recover post your amazing workout sessions! If you have any other queries, then feel free to contact us any time! Hoping to hear from you soon!

The post Post-Workout Recovery Guide! first appeared on Fit Foodies Mantra.

You may as well know that every cell in your body needs energy in order for it to work properly and the main source of energy comes from the sugars (also called glucose) present in our blood. Did you know that blood sugar is actually really important in order to promote the proper functioning of the heart, brain and even digestive system? And apart from that, the right blood glucose levels also help keep your vision and skin, both healthy!

Hypoglycemia is the condition where your blood glucose level falls below the normal range. Even though there are many symptoms which could make one think that the blood sugar level has fallen below normal, the most accurate way of determining the same is by going through a blood glucose test, which is easily available in pharmacies and can be done in the comfort of your home itself!

Symptoms:

There are many symptoms that you might notice if low blood sugar is an issue for you.

Headaches

Hunger

Rapid Heartbeat

Jitteriness

Visual Problems

Mood Swing

Poor balance

Chills and Cold Sweats

Causes:

There can be a fair few causes of low blood sugar levels and one of them happens to be diabetes. But sometimes it also happens that even if you don’t have diabetes, your body may be producing more insulin than what is needed.

Another reason could very well be excessive alcohol intake since the alcohol gets in the way of your liver’s ability to create a bank of glucose that can be released into your blood at the right time.

Conclusion:

Keeping in mind that you might be affected by low blood sugar levels when you are feeling any of the above-listed symptoms, could prove to be a lifesaver for you since untreated low blood sugar can prove to be quite dangerous. From seizures to even loss of consciousness, low blood sugars can also prove to be fatal at times! So remember to keep checking or consult a doctor in case you seem to be affected by 2 or more of the symptoms we have listed above, frequently! And if upon consultation with a doctor, you are advised to follow a particular kind of diet, then don’t be afraid to contact us!

The post The Effects of Low Blood Sugar on your Body! first appeared on Fit Foodies Mantra.

Surprised? Well, check out our list of the Top 3 ways to get those 6 packs faster then!

Hydrate:

No matter however many times we might have mentioned this, but it somehow still doesn’t seem enough! Hydrate! Keeping yourself hydrated and well-watered can make or break all your efforts to achieve those perfectly sculpted 6-packs! There is a reason behind it though!

You see, when you are well-hydrated, your body helps you give your metabolism a boost, that in turn helps you burn more belly fat which in turn paves your way towards achieving those amazing 6-packs! And as water is something that ends up making you feel fuller for longer, it also helps you eat less, and thus makes you lose weight too! A win-win situation, isn’t it?

Cardio All the way!

Cardio is basically any form of exercise that helps to increase your heart rate! When you decide to include cardio in your workout routines, you make sure that you end up burning extra fat, especially belly fat, thus helping your abdominal muscles to be more visible!

When you do cardio for merely 3-4 times in a week with diligence, it was found that there was a significant reduction of the belly fat of people. And it was also discovered that the more cardio a person did, the more the chance of the person losing more belly fat! Simple rules really, but definitely something that needs to be followed with the utmost dedication in order to achieve your goals.

Yes to Protein:

Another sure shot way of paving a deeper and wider path towards your destination of getting 6-pack abs is by increasing your protein intake! Did you know that any high-protein food helps you lose weight and cuts down on belly fat too! You see, when you increase your protein intake, you end up decreasing your calorie intake significantly!

Apart from that, they also brilliantly help supporting muscle growth! Thanks to this very property, consuming proteins post-workout is always advised. Post your workouts, when you consume protein, the protein helps you heal and build muscle tissues too! And the best part? It was recently discovered that protein besides aiding in the process of weight loss, help you preserve muscles mass as well as metabolism! What more could you have asked for?

Just remember, crunches and planks are not the only things that will help you get those 6-packs, there are more way, so don’t beat yourself up if you can’t hold that 1 min plank! Just remember to follow a healthy diet and the right kind of workouts, and you are sorted!

The post Top 3 ways to get those 6 packs faster first appeared on Fit Foodies Mantra.

Ofcourse the right kind of activity is extremely important when it comes to gaining and building lean muscle, but you also have to acknowledge the fact that eating the right kind of food helps speed up the process of the lean muscle gain too!

Challenging one’s body is the first step you take to help in the lean muscle building process but if your nutritional intake does not match what your body needs during this time, then any physical activity you might indulge in going forward, could prove to be of no use!

Confused as to what you should be eating during this time? Well then, you are in luck! Here is a list of the top 3 foods that will compliment your workout routines brilliantly when you are looking forward to build lean muscles.

Chicken Breast

Considered to be a must-have pantry essential when you go down the lean-muscle building road, there is a very important reason why chicken breast proves to be a great addition to your diet! Filled with proteins, Vitamin B6 and Niacin, nutrients that have been known to be exceptionally helpful for anyone who is hopeful about building lean muscles, chicken breast truly is something that you should have stocked in your fridge, during this journey of yours!

The nutrients present in the chicken breast help your body function properly when you are indulging in exercises as a result of which, the process of muscle building happens quicker and in a more efficient way. And if that was not enough, then let us also tell you that high-protein diets that include chicken in them, have been known to also aid fat loss exceptionally!

Soyabeans

If you are a vegetarian or a vegan, soyabeans are your best bet at receiving the right amount of protein for your body! Did you know that a mere half cup of soya beans contain close to 14 gms of protein? Something to think about, isn’t it? And apart from the protein content present in them, soyabeans also happen to have healthy unsaturated fats, Vitamin K, iron and phosphorus!

The main function of iron in your body is to help store and then transport oxygen to your blood and all your muscles. When working out, your muscles need to receive the right amount of oxygen, else there will be no use of doing one rigorous exercise after the other! And if, by some chance, you happen to be deficient in iron, then receiving oxygen by your muscles can be quite a task!

Quinoa

Fuelling yourself with enough energy giving foods is also of vital importance when it comes to building lean muscles apart from indulging in protein rich foods. Staring at that computer screen of yours for more than 8 hours a day could have a large impact on your shoulder too!

Constant and continues exposure to sitting still and working on your computer can lead to a lot of issues where your health is concerned. Everything from bad posture, headaches to joint pains could easily be caused by sitting still on that desk of yours! But all these issues can easily be addressed by indulging a few exercises that you can easily do while sitting at your desk.

Armpit Stretch

As this is one exercise that might be mistaken for you trying to smell your armpit, we suggest you try to do this somewhere where no one will look at you funny!

Start by sitting with your back straight

Proceed by rotating your head sideways. You know you are doing it right when your nose is directly above your armpit.

Using your hand, gently push your head so that your nose comes closer to your armpit. However, do not push to the point that it starts feeling uncomfortable for you.

Hold this position for 10 seconds.

Remember to repeat this 2 times on each side.

Arm Raises

These might be sounding basic to you, but they help brilliantly when it comes to easing any shoulder pain that you might be experiencing.

Begin by sitting straight in your chair

After this, raise your arms over your head, straight as an arrow. It should look as if you are trying to touch the ceiling.

While keeping your torso and head stationary, start by moving your arms back and forth. Remember to move your arms in a way that they are able to go behind your head as well.

This stretch will result in some kind of pulling feeling in t your mid-back region, which in turn will help you extend your spine while unfolding it as well.

You need to repeat this exercise 10 times in order for it to be effective for you.

Shoulder Rolls

Shoulder rolls happen to be one of the most basic, yet the most effective exercises you can do to help ease that shoulder pain of yours.

Sit in your chair, and remember to keep your back straight.

Continue by tucking your chin in.

While sitting straight roll your shoulder forward, down, back and up, in a circular motion.

Repeat this motion 10 times on one side, and then reverse it, and repeat 10 times again!

Apart from these exercises, try to be slightly active even when you are sitting down at your desk. The smallest things like leaning back in your chair, or standing up for some time can help shoulder pains from even appearing.

The post 3 Shoulder stretches to ease that pain first appeared on Fit Foodies Mantra.

Nowadays, almost every food item that we come across has “sugar” as an ingredient in it! And trust us when we tell you that, added sugar has to be one of the worst ingredients in today’s diet!

Added sugar can have a number of harmful effects on your health and can also lead to quite many diseases as well. Apart from this, it also negatively affects your metabolism. But here we want to highlight the top 3 reasons why sugar is bad for your health, so read on to know more!

Harmful to the Liver

Sugar is made up of two essential components; Glucose and Fructose. Before entering the bloodstream, sugar is broken down into these two elements. Glucose is usually a naturally occurring substance that is found in every living cell on the planet. Usually, it so happens that even if we don’t get it from our diet, it is produced in our body as well. However, unlike Glucose, Fructose is different. Our body does not essentially produce fructose naturally and neither does it need it. The main issue with fructose is that the liver is the only organ that can metabolize it effectively!

If fructose is taken in moderation, it is always a better idea, since the liver will easily be able to turn it into glycogen which it stores to be utilized later. But if one has fructose in excess, then there is a chance that the liver will become overloaded, and the body will then force the liver to turn the fructose into fat instead. In such a case, with continuous consumption of fructose, the liver will get overloaded as a result of which it can lead to fatty liver, which, in the long run, can lead to cirrhosis and even liver failure.

Insulin Resistance

Insulin is one of the most important hormones produced in our body that helps us in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It allows the glucose in the blood, to enter the cells in our body and instructs these cells to utilize it instead of utilizing fat. Too much of glucose, when present in the blood, can lead to various complication, especially in people with diabetes, like blindness.

When we consume too much sugar, the functions of insulin start becoming null and void and the cells in our body also start becoming resistant to it. This is basically what is known as insulin resistance, and is an underlying cause of many serious ailments, including, but not restricted to obesity, cardiovascular issues and type II diabetes.

Builds Up Cholesterol

Ofcourse saturated fats are bad for your health, no one can question that. But did you know that there is a more than likely chance that heart diseases are caused by the effect that fructose has on one’s metabolism? Many of the recent studies have proved that fructose can cause the triglyceride levels in the blood to rise considerably, apart from also raising the dense LDL (low-density lipoprotein) and oxidized LDL levels.

Other than these side effects, sugar also contributes to the build-up of fats around the abdomen, which is a root cause of abdominal obesity. All these problems and symptoms combined can contribute to the development of a lot of heart diseases!

So the next time you decide to reach for the extra serving of your favorite cereal for breakfast or that “healthy” whole-wheat cracker, think again! Keep in mind the things we have talked about here and you will be better off when it comes to leading a healthier life!
