How many times has it happened that you have ended up feeling extremely exhausted and potentially unwell post a workout session?

We are sure you know that essentially a good workout routine should provide you with more energy and make you feel good! But if the opposite of this is happening, then it might be due to one reason: Overdoing workouts!

A lot of us are motivated by the ‘no pain, no gain’ but if you end up taking this to an extreme, it can potentially be dangerous for you as well!

So why exactly is overdoing a workout.a bad idea? Let’s have a look.

Performance Slowdown

A sudden dip in your performance while working out, especially in exercises aerobic in nature like running, cycling or even swimming, then the chances are that you are pushing your body a little too much.

When you end up pushing your body so hard, then at a certain point of time, it will stop responding and as a result you won’t end up getting the results that you are working so hard.for!

Less Energy

Remember the time when, post a workout session, you were constantly on a high and feeling absolutely perky and energetic? Well, those are some of the benefits that regular exercising gives you.

However, contrary to this, if after a workout, you are feeling tired and physically and mentally exhausted, then this might be a sure shot sign that you are overworking your body.

Insomnia/Sleeplessness

A good, moderate workout session has always been known to provide you with a relaxed sleeping pattern. However, if you end up working out too much, you might just end up skipping that relaxing siesta time.

Overexerting oneself during workouts could cause you to become so tired that you just end up spending the night tossing and turning instead of falling peacefully asleep!

Affects mental health

There are a particular number of hours for which you should be working out in a week. Overdoing on your workout could very well end up causing mental health issues like depression, anxiety and mood-swings as well!

Recovery time

We are sure that you kist, by now, be aware of the fact that muscles need time to recover from workout sessions. However, the recovery process could potentially end up being hindered if you workout excessively.

Your muscles need to recover in order to make sure that your body stays away from aches and pains. So when you do not let your muscles recover because you are working out so rigourously, you WILL experience pains and aches in the body.

Other potential health issues:

Joint issues– If you are lifting weights thst are too heavy for you on a regular basis, it could alao end up affecting your joints too.

Reddish Urine– upon overworking your muscles and working out too rigourously and targeting only specific parts of the body, the chances of substances from damaged muscles leaking into the blood are high. This is called rhabdomyolysis and in the long run it could also lead to kidney issue.

These are merely some of the many issues that could result from overworking your body and muscles during your workouts. The key is to work moderately and within your potential to establish a healthy workout routine!

The post Why overdoing your workout can be harmful! first appeared on Fit Foodies Mantra.

A lot of us, during this pandemic of Covid-19 and the lockdown, have been missing out on our workouts simply due to the fact that all the gyms are closed and within reason obviously.

However, it has also got most of us thinking; what if something like this happens again and our workouts are forced to take a backseat? The need to stay on our toes when it comes to our exercise routines is a constant one and the sort that helps most of us get through the day, in a more relaxed and organized manner.

And this is where a very pertinent question arises in the back of each of our minds; Why not invest in a home gym instead?

We know that in the present situation, the investment in a home gym might seem like a good idea but let us also explore as to why it might not be as good as it seems!! Here are a few reasons as to why investing in a home gym might not the be the greatest idea!

Space constraints

If you have to have a well-planned home gym, then it goes without saying that you need A LOT of space! A whole room, in the least needs to be allotted to the home gym, and not a small one at that!

For a fully-equipped home gym a small space or a corner in a room just won’t do! However, if you are someone who as a lot of space at your home, then this point might just seem null and void to you!

Investment

Gym equipments DO NOT come cheap! At least not good quality ones. You might find home gym equipments in the market that seem cheap and work for you, but trust us when we tell you, cheap home gym equipments could potentially end up doing more harm than good.

A single, good quality, home gym equipment costs a good amount of money, and to have a fully equipped home gym, you have got to shell out a LOT of money! A basic home gym could cost you anywhere between 50,000/- to 5 lakh easily, depending on your requirement for weight machines and the likes! So, if you think you can establish a home gym in a budget friendly manner, you need to give it a second thought!

The Vibe

Our homes are places where we sit back, kick our feet up and relax most of the time. Those are the vibes that have seeped into our homes since forever! Do you really think you would be able to do full-fledged workout routine when all the vibes around you are screaming for you to relax? We think not!

You see, the atmosphere in any gym will always make you WANT to workout! You will always feel more motivated looking at your fellow gym goers and this will in turn help you push yourself more! Those are the vibes that have seeped into any gym, and THAT is what will work in your favour when you decide to workout!

Long-term investment

When you decide to invest in a home gym, you are potentially investing in a almost a 5-10 year long plan wherein you feel like you will be using your equipment for that long! Not only are you spending a lot on the equipments, you might, after a certain point of time, altogether give up on working out at home in the long run! Motivation might feel lacking, and you might just throw caution to the winds!

A proper gym on the other hand could very well be a trial and error thing. To make sure that you find the right fit in terms.of the gym, the instructor and the equipment, you could gain a month’s membership to test the waters first. If all goes well, you could end up signing up for a membership of a few months, which would STILL be cheaper than spending your money on a home gym!

We understand the need you feel right now to invest in a home gym seeing the situation unfolding in front of us. But know this, this situation is temporary at best, and panic buying will not help you in the least. Of course you do not want to miss out on your workouts, but there are also plenty of workout routines you can indulge in thst do not need any equipment whatsoever! So why not try those out for now?

The post Why not to invest in a home gym! first appeared on Fit Foodies Mantra.

Of course, the kind of workout that you do in this span of time would prove to be the greatest asset to your fat loss journey!
We are sure that you must be aware of many weight loss workouts, but knowing how to combine different workouts to reap the maximum benefits out of them could be tricky.
An intensive fat burner workout 5 mins a day can work miracles on your body. Of course, you also need to remember to eat a balanced and healthy meal along with this like fat burning foods to actually see results. But such a workout in itself could truly take you more than half way on that weight loss journey.
So here is an example of a set of weight loss exercises at home that you can try. These training routines which are 5 min long sets, are a combination of different workouts that will provide you with the maximum and help you burn fat wonderfully!
Set 1:
This is one of the fats burning workouts sets that essentially acts as a circuit training session. There is a total of eight exercises in this set, each having either a time of 30 seconds or 1 minute assigned to them. The best part about the exercise included in this set is that it can easily be done at the comfort of your home or any other open space and it requires next to no equipment either! So, let’s start, shall we?

V Pipe Exercise (Inverted version) (30 seconds)
A 30 second indulgence of this exercise can give you those killer abs you had always been dreaming of! The 2 things you require to do this workout flawlessly is willpower and an exercise mat!
1. Start by lying facing down with your toes on the mat.
2. Continue by placing your hands on the ground and push your body up to balance it on both the hands and toes
3. Pull the legs close to your body in order to make an inverted V shaped form with your body.
4. Now stretch your legs back away from the hands.
5. Continue this pulling and pushing of the legs for about 30 seconds

This exercise helps the arms and core and even the lower back

W Leg Lifts (30 seconds)
Works brilliantly for both legs and arms as well. It also helps you lose fat from your body as a whole
1. Start by lying with your back on the floor with your legs close to each other.
2. Lift both the legs together, bring them near your tummy and bring it back to the ground.
3. Repeat the same for 30 seconds
.
Jump Squats (30 seconds)
Cardio workout that helps lose weight from the entire body.
1. Stand straight with your feet shoulder width apart
2. Bend into the best squat that you can
3. Slowly start coming up from the squat but jump when you are just about to exit from your position
4. Once landed, go down into a squat again repeat.
5. Repeat the process for 30 seconds.

Superman exercise (30 seconds)

A wonderful workout that engages your core and your legs and help reduce fat from the stomach, thighs and lower back
1. Start by lying in the mat facing the floor with your arms and kegs stretched out
2. Try lifting your chest and your thighs off of the ground while balancing your body on your stomach.
3. Keep yourself straight while doing this.
4. Repeat for 30 seconds

Single leg lift jump (1 minute)

This exercise helps tone your tummy and thighs while also improving your sense of balance. Though this might be one of the simplest exercises, it could very well also be one of the most effective workouts to lose weight.
1. Start by standing straight on your mat
2. Continue by raising your left leg off of the ground.
3. Try touching the ground with your hands and while coming up, jump
4. The trick is to keep the leg lifted off of the floor all the while
5. You need to keep it bent but if you feel any kind of strain, take a little break.
6. Do the whole touch ground-jump-touch ground routine with one leg lifted up first for 30 seconds
7. Take a little break and then do the same with the other leg for 30 seconds

We understand that if you are someone who has just started off working out it might seem difficult. But with the right amount of practise you will be able to do justice to the workout.

Push-up + Knee Kick (30 seconds)

If you have a small space to exercise in, then this could very well be the best use of solace that you can make. Though this is a variation of the traditional push-up, it works your entire body brilliantly, particularly targeting the stubborn upper arm fat. If you are finding it difficult to do a proper push-up, begin with the knee push up instead.
1. Start by lying flat on your mat
2. Come up in the push-up position that you prefer
3. Do one push up from your starting position and come back to it.
4. Once you are done with your 1 push-up, touch your right knee to your right elbow and return to the starting position
5. Now touch your left knee to your left elbow and return to the starting position.
6. Do the whole starting position-push up-right knee to right elbow-starting position-left knew to left elbow-starting position-push up routine for 30 seconds.
When done regularly, this adds a whole amount of strength to your upper arms whilst also toning them.

Bent Leg rotation (1 minute)
If you are looking for an exercise that targets your thighs as well as your abs, then this could truly work miracles for you.
1. Begin by standing straight on your mat
2. Continue by placing your hands on the back of your head
3. Lift your right leg towards your waist and rotate it forward, while keeping it lifted for 15 seconds
4. Once that is done, rotate the same leg backwards for 15 seconds
Repeat the same with your other leg.
Though this might seem challenging, it truly does help you strengthen your knee while also helping you lose weight.

Skipping (30 seconds)

Nothing gets easier and simpler to do than skipping. Skipping can help you lose weight wonderfully from the whole body. But skipping also particularly helps get rid of fat in the thighs.
1. Simply take your skipping rope and jump away for 30 seconds.
2. You can also alternate between intensive skips and normal ones.
4. Also remember to keep your back and knees straight at all times

Tips to start doing these 5-minute sets:
Working out in the morning on an empty stomach is ideal.
However, if you are someone who wakes up and has 2 glasses of water first thing in the morning then give a little gap between the water intake and working out.
You can also take a 10 second break between each workout if you get too tired, not more than that!
Other than that, you are good to go!
Happy Fat Burning! We truly hope this helps you achieve your fat loss goals!

The post Burn Fat with this 5-minute Workout at Home first appeared on Fit Foodies Mantra.

Of the many diet plans that have become popular in the recent past, the one that has been more or less the talk of the town is definitely the Ketogenic diet! However, let us start with the fun bit first eh?

We understand that there can be some confusion when it comes to the ketogenic diet and about what to include in the diet as a whole, so we are here to clear any and every doubt you might have!

But, before we do get to that, how about we get to know what the whole hype around ketogenic diet is all about? Well, if you have ever googled ‘how to lose weight, the chances are that more than a few pages might have mentioned the use of a keto diet to achieve your goals.

Weight loss, however is not the only benefit that one can get from following the ketogenic diet.

In order to understand everything, there is to know about this wonderful diet and the benefits it provides when compared to a low-fat diet, read on!

What exactly is a ketogenic diet?

A ketogenic diet or simply keto as it is popularly known is essentially a high-fat, low-carb and moderate protein diet which is fashioned in a manner which helps your body reach what is called Ketosis!

Essentially what this metabolic state of ketosis does is that it enables the body to burn fat instead of glucose to help fuel itself.

It is all a game of macros! The basis of the diet lies in the fact that it helps introduce foods and a routine that helps you change the way your body is able to burn fuel for energy.

You ask how this is done?

Well, by consuming close to no carbs and high-quality healthy fats, your body is able to eliminate glucose from the body, which basically is its first choice to produce energy. The next stop for the body to obtain fuel from is the stored glycogen to produce energy post which it heads towards the fat!

Upon the depletion of both these sources of energy, the liver then resorts to converting fatty acids into what are known as ketone bodies and these ketone bodies are the ones that your body will be able to put to use to manufacture energy if needed! Essentially these ketone bodies are the generator.

When this stage is reached, then it is known that your body is in ketosis.

Essentially, thanks to the right kind of diet plan, you should be deriving your calories from 5% carbs, 20% proteins and the remaining 75% from healthy fats! We know that this might be sounding tricky, but when it comes to a good dietician and nutritionist, a diet chart for weight loss can easily be drawn without much hassle.

What can you consume?

Just because you are on a diet does not mean that you will have very little choice when it comes to the kind of foods that you can consume. This brilliant diet plan to lose weight truly has, under its wing a vast variety of foods that you can indulge in.

Right from meats and full-fat dairy products to berries, nuts and seafood as well. However, there is one sphere of this diet plan that could be a little confusing and that is when it comes to vegetables. Of course, there are many low-carb veggies out there like most of the leafy greens available, brocolli and the likes.

However, vegetables like potato, pumpkins and corn also od not make the cut! So, tread carefully.

List of things that you can eat!

This might seem counterproductive, but barring some fruits, there are plenty of fruits that you can actually consume even in your keto diet. Fruits that are high in fibre and low in carbs are an ideal solution for this brilliant diet! However, moderation is the key here!

Peach

Lemons

Star fruit

Tomatoes

Avocadoes

Watermelon

Berries

What to stay away from!

The amount of time taken for your body to reach ketosis depends on how strict you are about the diet in itself. In case you are consuming less than 50gms of carb in a day, then it will merely take your body a few days to reach ketosis.

The time taken will also depends on a few other markers like age, food intake and metabolism. What needs to be taken into account is that every body is different and one rule does not apply to everyone!

Another thing that definitely needs to be kept in mind is that throughout this diet plan, you NEED to stay in CALORIE DEFICIT which essentially means that you ought to be burning more calories than you are consuming! If not, then no amount of diet plans be it keto or others will help you lose weight and get fitter!

When it comes to trying to stick to your diet, there are many things that might hinder your resolve! Cravings, mood swings, stress and the likes can truly make you want to quit. However, here are a few things that might help you stick to your diet better! Have a look at some of them here.

Understand what your body wants

Cravings are a sign that you are not providing your body with well-timed meals with consistent gaps in between. These cravings could very well slow down your metabolic rate and your body, as a result will end up storing more fat.

We understand that sometimes the diet that you have to follow or that has been recommended to you might consist of certain things that you could not possibly think of having. In such situations listen to your body and don’t eat that particular food. You do not want to end up confusing your body. Instead choose an alternative that you like and stick to it! The happier you are, the healthier your body will be.

Portion control

Where we tell you to increase your meal frequencies, we also ensure thst we tell you about portion control. If you end up having the same quantity in your 6 meals throughout the day as you were having in the 3-4 meals prior to your diet, then you will not end up being heathier.

There are a ton of food groups that should be included in your daily diet in order to keep you healthy. Unless and until you need to, do not skip any particular group. Reduce the portion you intake and and make sure that you add these groups to your diet.

Keep yourself hydrated

We will never be able to emphasise the importance of keeping oneself hydrated when it comes to a healthier lifestyle. We understand that with the amount of worm most of us do, the thought of drinking water often crosses our mind. But your water intake is directly proportional to your health, always remember that.

Keep a sipper with you at a times so that you are able to remind yourself thst you ought to drink more water. In case you get bored of plain old water, yiu can also add fruits like strawberry or kiwi and veggies like cucumber and mint to the water to enhance the flavour naturally and give you some variety!

These three tips will truly go a long way in helping you maintain the new found diet plan that you are trying to implement in your life without a lot of effort.

The post Tips to help you get through your diet first appeared on Fit Foodies Mantra.

This is why it is of the utmost importance, now more than ever, that we start trying to adapt better to the changing circumstances.

It has now been 2 months since the lockdown snd self-isolation and we understand that it might already have started getting on people’s nerves. This could very well be classified as Quarantine Fatigue. However, even though the pandemic does not seem to be going anywhere soon, we can always opt to keep a few things in particular in mind to help deal with this issue.

What is Quarantine Fatigue?

If you are someone who has been experiencing unexplained tiredness and fatigue at the end of each day, even when you haven’t been overtly active, then you just might be dealing with Quarantine Fatigue. Essentially this just might be because of all the anxiety that seems to be surrounding us in these uncertain times. From having to face financial difficulties to having to both work from home while tutoring their kids, this excess work can truly leave people exhausted by the end of a day!

Struggling due to lack of human interaction is also an issue that a lot of you might be facing since no one likes to be isolated within a four-wall structure for such a long time. Now, however, is a good idea learn to deal with this fatigue as this might the new way of living for sometime.

How to help yourself!

Create new routines: If you are someone who has found that their initial routine seems disrupted, then it just might be time for you to establish a new one. This will help you make a mental note of what all you want to do throughout the day, and will leave you satisfied upon achieving these goals.

Eat healthier: Of course it is easy to fall into the habit of eating junk when you are at home most of the time. However making a conscious effort towards following a healthy diet is of the utmost importance to keep quarantine fatigue at bay!

Stay physically active: Yes gyms are our go-to place when we are looking to get active. Of course that cannot be done right now. So it is important that one stay active, especially during this time as one could easily find themselves drawn to a sedentary lifestyle. This, as a result, will contribute further to the your quarantine fatigue.

Are you someone who has been feeling a wee bit off during this lockdown? Well, try following the steps mentioned above, and I am sure that you will feel much better!

The post ‘Quarantine Fatigue’: What is it and how to cope with it! first appeared on Fit Foodies Mantra.

One cannot debate with the fact that a good night’s sleep is of the utmost importance when one wants to maintain their health in the best way possible. However we also understand the fact that due to the current scenario with the news of the spread of COVID 19, there must be a lot of stress most must be going through.

This stressing in turn could very well affect your sleep cycle in the worst way possible. However, the good thing here is that you can actually de-stress and restore your sleeping pattern by keeping a few things in mind. Let us look at some of them.

Keep away from frequent or long naps

Working from home might have its perks, but the chances of the couch calling out to you often are also there. If you plan on maintaining a proper routine, sleeping or napping for too long during the day time might end up making you not want to sleep at night. This is one thing that will definitely mess with your sleep cycle. A 15 minute nap works best, so try to keep it under the same in the afternoons.

Workout (not prior to sleeping)

You might think working out during a time when most gyms are closed is difficult. However, there a lot of variety of workouts that you can indulge in especially since a good workout is tied to a soundless sleep. When you are tired and are also feeling accomplished after a good workout routine, you tend to fall asleep easily.

Avoid screen time before bed

No one argue with the fact that during this trying time, the internet has truly provided us with means of entertainment as well as information. It has also enabled us to work from home without much hassle. However, the one thing you need to be doing when you are trying to fall asleep is to keep your phones and computers at bay. It has been advised by most doctors that unplugging your PC and keeping your phone aside an hour before bed will help you sleep better.

Keep news watching under control

We know that trying to escape the news is something that cannot be done at this time and it is always good to be aware about what all is going on around us. That however, does not mean that you end up overdoing the news consumption. When you constantly end up tuning into the news, you can end up developing anxiety which in turn will affect your sleep cycle to a great extent. So try to steer clear of the excess.

Consume foods that will help you sleep better

There are plenty of things that you might find in your pantry easily which help you fall asleep and stay asleep better. A combination of chamomile tea and a few almonds has been known to reduce stress and promote a healthy night’s sleep without much effort. Even a little warm milk mixed with turmeric has been found to help one sleep soundly. So try consuming these products before you head to bed.

These are a few of the tried and tested I myself have found to be useful and I truly hope they will be useful and helpful for you in getting the sound sleep that you deserve. Stay Home, Stay Safe everyone!

The post Tips to help you keep stress at bay and sleep better during the Covid crisis first appeared on Fit Foodies Mantra.

The lockdown definitely seems to be making a huge difference in most of our healthy lifestyles. Whether it is having us make bad and unhealthy decisions as we indulge in junk-food more, or whether it is doing the opposite and helping us make healthier decisions when it comes to our diet and fitness routines, the Lockdown definitely has made changes without a doubt.

Another issue that the Lockdown has brought with is unavailablity of certain things. There might be a few days that you will not find fruits or vegetables to include in your daily diet. So how does one eat healthy during such a time!

Well, by using the things you already have at home of course!

Here are our four recipe ideas and their nutritional values that you can make using the things you already have in your pantry!

Chicken and Rice

Well, by using the things you already have at home of course!

Here are our four recipe ideas and their nutritional values that you can make using the things you already have in your pantry!

Chicken and Rice

It literally could not get simpler than this meal! Most people have things like rice, flour and the basic staples lying at home even during this lockdown phase.

We used boiled white rice that was already there in the fridge. That accompanied with chicken breast, made in such a way that it could be kept and had easily for 3-4 days.

Add some boiled spinach to that and you have an amazingly balanced dish on your hands. With fiber, carbs, protein filled to the brim on the dish, you cannot go wrong with it!

Omelette

Apart from all the basic staples, eggs are definitely always available in any and every grocery store, even if it during the Lockdown itself. The great things about eggs is the fact that they are extremely versatile!

Omelette is merely one thing that you can make using eggs. Even in this you can have different variations. Like you can make an omelette with the whole egg, or if you want a healthier option, make an all egg white omelette. Add a couple of chopped onions to it, which is another thing ALWAYS available in our Indian household without fail, and you have an amazing and healthy dish on hand.

This dish has an amazing protein content and is fairly high in dietary fiber too! Another plus? It is absolutely delicious too!

Oats Cheela

The Besan cheela is definitely something that most Indian households have been making since time immemorial. It has also been a major part of most of our childhoods.

This however is a twist on the classic cheela made with another ingredient present, nowadays, in most of your kitchens; oats!

The combination of the steel cut oats and the egg whites gives this dish a wonderfully soft yet a crisp texture, which a true delight to indulge in!

The Oats cheela contains a good amount of proteins, fiber and carbs alongwith essential vitamins and minerals that helps keep your immune system working well. Season it with your favourite seasonings, and you are done! Definitely cannot say no to this one!

Khichdi

The ultimate Indian comfort food, if there was one, then it os definitely the khichdi without fail! This amazing amalgamation of rice and dal is wonderfully healthy, easy to make and uses the most basic and minimal ingredients.

Usually, split moong dal and rice are used to make the khichdi, both of which are ALWAYS in our pantries without fail.

Did you know that a mere serving of Dal Khichdi gives 320 calories. Out of this, carbohydrates comprise 232 calories, proteins account for 50 calories and remaining calories come from fat which is 38 calories.

These four amazing recipes, though some of the simplest happen to be extremely delicious and nutritious apart from being made with ingredients always readily available. So what more could one ask for during this Lockdown? Eat healthy, stay home and stay safe everyone!

The post Eating healthy during the #Lockdown without fruits and veggies! first appeared on Fit Foodies Mantra.
